Air Fryer Onion Rings

Doug asked for onion rings with our sous vide steak tonight, so I tried a new recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large sweet onion cut in 1/2-inch-thick rounds, then separated into rings
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Optional - 1 tablespoon grated Romano cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (or crackers crumbled into panko size pieces)
  • Cooking spray

Instructions:

  1. Preheat air fryer for 5 minutes at 400 degrees. (I also preheated my oven, so I could make up all the rings at the same time.)
  2. Mix together flour and spices in a dish that you can easily dip the largest onion ring into
  3. In another dish, lightly beat the egg and 1 tablespoon water
  4. In a third dish, place the panko/crumbs
  5. Dredge each onion ring in flour, then in egg mix, then into panko/crumbs. Place on a plate while you coat the others.
  6. Lightly spray both sides of the rings with coking spray.
  7. Place rings in the air fryer, add a rack, and place in additional rings. Air fry for 10 minutes or so. (It may help to flip them at about 6 minutes.)
  8. Place the extra rings on a cookie sheet in the pre-heated oven for 10 minutes or so.
