Cheesy Doggy Rolls

I decided to make some shaped rolls for social hour. I was going for piggies, but these turned out kind of dog like.

Ingredients:

  • 1        ounces lukewarm water
  • 1        tablespoon sugar
  • 2        teaspoons instant yeast
  • 8 1/2    ounces sourdough starter, fed or unfed
  • 10 1/2    ounces All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 1/4    teaspoons salt
  • 2 1/2    ounces soft butter (5 tablespoons)
  • 3     ounces cheese, shredded (I used 2/3 cheddar and 1/3 mozzarella)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1    tablespoon capers, rinsed and blotted

  • 1    egg + 1 tablespoon water, whipped to make egg wash

Instructions:

  1. Mix water, yeast, and sugar together. Let sit for a few minutes while gathering other ingredients.
  2. Mix together sourdough starter, egg and butter in a stand mixer bowl.
  3. Add in yeast mixture, flour, salt, shredded cheese, and spices.
  4. Knead for 5 minutes until smooth.
  5. Let dough rise for about 90 minutes
  6. Preheat oven to 425. Place parchment paper or silpat sheets on two cookie sheet.
  7. Divide dough into 32 pieces.
  8. Roll each piece into an oval.
  9. Cut small slit at top.
  10. Brush with egg wash.
  11. Pinch bottom of circle up and together to make a snout.

  12. Press in two capers for eyes.

  13. Bake for 11 to 13 minutes until golden brown.

Carole's Notes:

These were tasty. I was aiming for a piggy face look - so I will try again with a stiffer dough.
