I wanted a quick dinner, so I made some French Toast sticks out of some Cranberry Walnut bread that Dana made us.
Ingredients:
- 4 or 5 slices bread, thickly sliced (Texas Toast style)
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 eggs
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablepoon butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon orange zest (optional)
- sliced strawberries (optional, for serving)
Instructions:
- Slice each bread slice into thirds. (If your bread is pretty fresh, dry out for 20 minutes or so in an oven at 300 degrees. This makes the sticks stiffer, so you can pick them up with your fingers to eat!)
- Spray bottom basket and a rack of air fryer lightly with cooking spray.
- Keep the rack out of the air fryer for a few minutes while you preheat air fryer to 350°F
- Whisk the milk, eggs, butter, and vanilla in a flat container that will fit the sticks.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the cinnamon and sugar.
- Dip each bread stick quickly into the egg mixture, turning to coat all sides.
- Sprinkle the sugar mixture onto the top and bottom sides of the bread sticks.
- Place as many bread sticks as will fit in the basket, separating slightly.
- Place the rack over the first row of bread sticks, and place as many as will fit sticks on the top rack.
- Cook at 350°F for about 8 minutes, or until just crispy.
- Remove from basket and allow to cool a bit.
- Serve with maple syrup, sliced berries, and bacon.
Carole's Notes:
We liked this with sliced strawberries and bacon. The recipe is lightly adapted from https://www.lovebakesgoodcakes.com/air-fryer-french-toast-sticks/
